Is it magic or just mad skills? "Simulated Process" 101
WHAT THE HECK IS SIMULATED PROCESS?
Simulated, shmimulated .This is fancy speak for “magic printing”. We’ve been doing a buttload of super colorful prints lately. The secret is something called a “halftone”. We have all been fooled by the power of the mighty, but tiny, HALFTONE.
half·tone
/ˈhafˌtōn/
noun
a reproduction of a photograph or other image in which the various tones of gray or color are produced by variously sized dots of ink.
We can even find similar effects in nature. Check out this super wild photo of an owl, taken by our great friend and long time supporter Rob Hopkins ( https://buffalomade.co // https://dribbble.com/robkins // @buffalomadeco // @strongholdstudio )
When looking from a distance, the eyes look like a darker shade of mauve. But when you zoom in, you can see that is just an illusion, a magic trick if you are into wizardry and witch behavior. We can use different resolution dots (size of each dot) and space the dots in a way that allow for variants, or shades of a single color.
Even cooler, we can use halftones to create different colors. We all know yellow and blue make … GREEN! Did you know that a newspaper is printed with just four colors? It’s called CMYK: CYAN (blue) , YELLOW, MAGENTA (reddish), & BLACK. These four colors can trick your eyes into thinking its seeing a real photograph… using the power of halftones. That’s the best real life magic you’ll ever see!
Now, thats a very simple, toned down version of “simulated process”, but hopefully you’ve learned something! The real magic comes when youre combining several colored halftones, to make hundreds of shades and variants of that same color… turning a 4 color print into a 16 color print… We can go over that next time.
